Something new is coming to Sedona this Christmas season. Residents and visitors are encouraged to mark Dec. 14 to 17 on their calendars for something organizers expect to be enjoyable for the whole family.

Sedona Northern Lights — which will be the country’s largest projection show on a natural canvas — will help showcase “Sedona’s profound beauty, thriving arts scene, dark skies and enchanting landscapes.”

Produced by Los Angeles-based PaintScaping, a world leader in 3-D projection mapping, this massive holiday light show will occur for only four nights and will be presented by the city of Sedona, the Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau and the Sedona Arts Center.

The show will bring together light, art and nature to create a festive familyfriendly experience. “As with other 3-D mapping projects, this could be quite the creative spectacle,” said Kelli Klymenko, marketing director for the Sedona Arts Center. “There’s practically no limit to what can be done visually on such a large natural canvas. I expect it to be festive and artistic to say the least.”

By projecting 3-D art onto Camelhead Rock [located next to Snoopy Rock formation], Sedona Northern Lights will virtually transform the natural landscape into a projection screen that can be seen miles away.

“I believe this does have the potential to be a signature holiday event,” Klymenko said, noting that if successful, they would like to have the light show again. “It can change year by year by adding new elements and creative visuals to keep it new and fresh each year.”

This large-scale show will be visible from all of Uptown and Gallery Row, with five-to-six-minute art projections taking place at the top of every hour from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will also serve as a prelude to the Sedona Arts Center’s 60th anniversary celebration.

“As we kick off the new year and begin celebrating our 60th anniversary, we encourage new and creative ways to share and enjoy art — and this fits right in to that model,” he said. “We will be a viewing location for the light show with creative opportunities for art lovers all evening long.”
